There are more than 3,000 species of mosquito, but of these only the ladies attack us. Females need the protein contained in human blood to reproduce (males are vegan). They lay an average of 100 eggs at a time, and a young mosquito is adult after a week. Males do not gloat about adulthood for long, as their maximum lifespan is 10 days. The females, on the other hand, enjoy a much longer life span - 6 to 8 weeks, and up to six months in hibernation! The role of males is to participate only once in a Dirty Dancing-like mating ritual, during which mosquitoes form pairs with individuals with the most similar... rhythm and speed of wing movements. And these can beat up to 600 times per second! Hence the annoying mosquito vibrating sound....
Some females 'eat' twice as much as they weigh in one sitting.
